CSR Movement '09 - Community Project Series brought together 15 corporations to play their part for the community by participating in five projects over three days from 21 - 23 August.
The series benefited more than 400 beneficiaries, including the disadvantaged children from Gracehaven and Club Rainbow, the hearing-impaired youth from the Singapore Association for the Deaf, needy elderly from AWWA Community Home for Senior Citizens, Jamiyah Home for the Elderly and Sunlove Marsiling, and low-income families helped by Bukit Ho Swee Family Service Centre (FSC).
The 3-day programme was fully sponsored and supported by various corporations. Beyond making monetary contributions, CSR Movement ‘09 also brought together the combined efforts of more than 120 corporate volunteers.
What went on at the CSR Movement?
My Storyboard < >
Tat’s IT Solutions donated 5 sets of computers to Gracehaven, a children’s home. The IT company also upgraded the home’s second-hand computers by gathering their business partners to donate money for the upgrading work. Besides donations in kind, founders and owners of Tat's IT Solutions also gave their time to conduct basic PowerPoint training for 11 children. At the end of the training, the children put what they learnt into action by creating a 10-slide presentation on Gracehaven. All the children were also presented with a certificate of participation. It was indeed an enriching time for the children.
Waltz for All < >
The evening event was fully sponsored by Maybank. Staff of Maybank accompanied 35 elderly from Sunlove Marsiling Neighbourhood Link and Jamiyah Home for the Elderly (Darul Takrim) to learn waltz! The night began with a 10-course buffet dinner, followed by a 20 min waltz lesson conducted by Aleena Tan, Vice-President of Sunny Low Dance Studio. It was a memorable night where the elderly and staff had fun learning and interacting with each other. One of the volunteers from Maybank commented that all the staff enjoyed themselves and thanked CityCare for the efforts in organising and making this event a successful one!

Cannan Dental Surgery, Dayspring Medical Centre and Origins Exterminator participated in this meaningful project to benefit the low income families from Bukit Ho Swee Family Service Centre. Dental students from the National University of Singapore also participated by providing free dental screening and advice. Besides dental screening, the families also received free eye checks, blood pressure checks and health advice from our volunteer doctor. The corporate volunteers had a fulfilling time assisting with the eye checks and befriending the families. Beneficiaries who were diagnosed with poor eyesight were given a pair of free spectacles sponsored by Spectacle Hut. Ms Karen Kuah, a community worker at the centre commented that the project was very beneficial as dental screening and eye checks are rarely provided during health screenings.

Twenty students from the Singapore Association for the Deaf (SADeaf) received a free makeover by Creaive Moodz, and a photo shoot at Black Box Photography studio. After the session, the students were each given a CD containing all their shots, a hard copy of their group shot and a hard copy of their individual shot. In return, the students also made an appreciation card for the volunteers. This event has helped to boost the confidence and morale of the students. Kudos to Black Box Photography and Creative Moodz who went the extra mile to make their day.
Shopping Spree < >
Staff from Maybank participated in this meaningful event by befriending and bringing the elderly to NTUC FairPrice where each elderly was given $50 to shop for groceries. After shopping, the volunteers accompanied the elderly back to their homes and had lunch with them. There was also a lucky draw at the end of the day. It was a truly enjoyable day for the elderly and volunteers.
