WHY CITYCARE
CityCare was started by a group of young professionals with a course to promote volunteerism and philanthropy in the community.
Survey† has shown that while volunteer participation has risen by 1.7 percent from 2004 to 2008, 66% of Singaporeans remain in the non-volunteer sector. Despite the number of volunteers increasing, only 45 million volunteer hours were recorded for 2008, compared to 49 million for 2006. the study also showed that Singaporeans lagged in giving of their time, compared to citizens in the UK and US.
In the compulsory Community Involvement Projects in schools, many of the youths seem to be providing labor to serve ad-hoc projects without proper education and understanding in the areas of community needs that they are serving.
This has cultivated a mindset of indifference that volunteering is an act of the hand by providing manpower rather than an act from the heart — where there is passion and commitment to the course.
We believe that transformation in society begins with transformation of the mind.
By means of EDUCATION, ENCOURAGEMENT and EMPOWERMENT, CityCare provides volunteering opportunities for organizations and individuals to show genuine concern and social responsibility within the community.
